Mulligan Family History

This notable Irish surname is an Anglicized form of the Old Gaelic "O'Maolagain", descendant of Maolagan, a personal byname from a double diminutive of "maol", bald, tonsured. Traditionally, Irish family names are taken from the heads of tribes, revered elders, or some illustrious warrior, and are usually prefixed by "Mac", son of , or "O" denoting "grandson, male descendant of". The O'Maolagain sept is of distinguished origin, its chiefs being lords of a territory called Tir MacCarthain (in the baronies of Boylagh and Raphoe, County Donegal). They also held sway in the adjacent counties of Fermanagh and Monaghan up to the mid 17th Century, when they were largely dispossessed in the Plantation of Ulster...

Hello there, My direct ancestor is Mary Mulligan from Dublin who married James Blake from Clare in 1862 in St Nicholas without Parish, Dublin. Mary's father Michael was a soldier, I think from the 18th regiment of foot. He was attested in 1840 place of origin Roscommon and discharged in Dublin. If I have the correct record, he was discharged medically unfit after fighting in China. I think I have found a connection with the very early Mulligans from County Donegal but am struggling find any official support. The connection I have is a "penal Crucifix" dated 1724 which means someone from my family was at the pilgrimage of St Patrick's Purgatory in Lough Derg, Donegal in 1724. I believe the Mulligans (O'Mulligans) had a family seat in Donegal until the Plantation of Ulster removed their lands causing them to disperse. Any ideas about how I could check out the facts of my story and flesh out the details of these ancestors lives would be very thankfully received
