ROCK Family History
Recorded as Roake, Rock, Rocke, Roque, the diminutives Rockie, Rockey and Ruckie, and the plurals Roakes, Rockes, Rocks, Rokes, Wrocks, and possibly others, this interesting surname is medieval English. It has several possible origins. The first is residential for somebody who lived near a notable crag or outcrop. This is from the pre 7th century word 'rocc'. The second is again residential but this time for somebody who lived near a large oak tree. This is a fusing of the Middle English phrase "atter oke", meaning at the oak tree. Thirdly it can be locational either from the village of Rock in Northumberland, which is on a rock, or from Rock in Worcestershire, which is again the fused form of 'atter oke'...Select Audience

Rock
Hello, my second great grandfather is Patrick W Rock, born January 1, 1814, he married Ellen Monaghan born in 1819. Before immigrating to America they had three children, Ellen, Michael, and Mary. In an article written about him, it said that Patrick lived in Ireland until twenty-one years of age, then came to America. He remained about two years and then returned to Ireland in 1846 and remained six years. He again came to America. The dates don't add up but that's what was written. I'm hoping to find where his family/parents lived and are buried. I also don't know if the family name was spelled differently in Ireland. Here is the link to the article, http://www.hinkletown.com/rocks.html His siblings were Ellen, John, Martin, Andrew D. Catherine, and Mary. His parents might have been Martin Rock and Eleanora Swift. The other names around the family are Quinn, Lally, and possibly Rose O'Neill. I would greatly appreciate any help in my research. Thank you in advance, Corrie
