POLAND Family History
This is a confusing English, and sometimes Irish, surname. If English it is recorded in the spellings of Poland, Polland, Pollane, Pollin, Powland, Powlesland and if Irish generally as McPolin, Polin and Poland, although most spellings are also found in Ireland. Again for most nameholders the surname probably originates from the village of Poland, near the town of Odiham, in the county of Hampshire. If Irish it is often from the same source, but if not is from a Gaelic diminutive of the ancient name Paul, and first recorded in Ireland in the 17th century.Select Audience

My Grandfather was Peter Poland, Bapt. (Polin) County Down 1855-1930 (Perth Western Australia) his parents, Francis Polin B. 1823 (+or-)and Elizabeth Jane McEvoy (1825) marr. Derrylekkagh 1846, I have managed to find Eliza's birth records but have never been able to find anymore information on Francis, I do believe there is a Scottish connection also, the godparents on Peter and his siblings (James,Margaret,Jane) baptisms include, Luke Polin, McAtee, Campbell. I also find Eliza moving to Liverpool somewhere around the 1870's as a widow, the two younger children ( Peter and Jane) remaining in Ireland until around 1880, Peter also worked as a crew member on ships until he settled in Australia, seeking any clues to a family connection.

James Poland (1820-1867) married Susannah Gilmore/Gilmour (1818-1875) in 1838 in Co Down, Northern Ireland. They moved to Scotland. James' parents were Joseph and Marjery (nee Pollock); Susannah's parents were John and Elizabeth (nee Ellot/Elliott). seeking heraldry on my Irish and Scottish History
