MORIARTY Family History
This famous surname is Irish. It is a developed form of the Olde Gaelic pre 10th century surname O'Muircheartaigh. The prefix O' indicates male descendant of, plus in this case a personal or perhaps occupational name "Muircheartach" meaning " The navigator". This sept originally closely associated with the O'Donoghues and the O'Mahonys, and belonged to County Kerry. Their territory lay on both sides of Castlemaine Harbour where they held great sway prior to the Anglo-Norman Invasion of 1170. Henry Augustus Moriarty (1815 - 1906) was true to his name, a renowned navigator who was highly acclaimed for his success in the recovery of first Atlantic telegraph cable which broke in mid-ocean in 1866...Select Audience

Moriarty
My grandfather was born 1838 (Timothy Herbert) in Kent His father Herbert Timothy I guess fled ireland and became a feller being Irish a tree fell upon his cabin and he died sadly. Of course my gandfather went broke 35 years before I was born and off to WA goldfields.
I should be famous because I shout at the world there is only sunshine (starshine,EM radiation, knowledge - take your name pick) and says gravity, time (your watch tells where the sun shines), space and countless others like choice are inventions for glamour. But 'shit' there is also no choice and so and so no change is possible. weep weep!

I believe my ancestor John Moriarity was born April 1823 in county Kerry. My grandfather (also named John Moriarity) said the family comes from the Castlemaine area. John appears to have arrived in Boston, MA on the Conrad (from Liverpool) in April 1848, at age 25 and married a woman named Mary Sullivan in 1853 (whom John may have met on the ship to America). At some point after arriving in America and before being naturalized, John added the "i" before the ty to his (and my) surname. I'd love to find John's parents or any other of my Irish Moriarty kin. I looked through the Catholic baptism records on Ancestry, but there are so many John Moriartys being born in Kerry around 1823, and I have no way of knowing which one is my ancestor, since I don't know his parents names or exactly where they're from in County Kerry. Would greatly appreciate any tips on how to narrow down the search.

My Moriarty ancestor to the US was John Joseph Moriarty born 5 Jan 1865. I lose track of him in the US after 1898 when he disappears without a trace nor family knowledge. I feel he may have returned to Castletownbere, Co Cork but I cant trace him there either. He was a sailor by family trade and could read/write and worked as a clerk and bartender in Providence RI.
