MCGLYNN Family History

Recorded in many spelling forms including McGlynn, McGloin, and McGlone, as well as short forms without any prefix, this is an Irish surname. It derives from the pre 10th century Gaelic "Mag Fhloinn", from the elements "Mag" a variant form of Mac or Mc, and "flann", meaning ruddy, and probably given as a nickname to someone of a healthy reddish colour. The main sept of Mag Fhloinn originated in the the counties of Westmeath and Roscommon, from where it spread west of the Shannon, and even as far north as County Donegal. Glynn is also of Welsh origin, from "de Glin", but it is seldom the source of the name in Ireland...

    Michael McGlynn

Hi I am Michael McGlynn.  My grandfather Mikeal McGlynn was born in Dongal in 1887 and died in 1920, in an area called Ballykerrigan just outside of Ballybofey.  His wife was a local girl Maggie Magee born 1891.  His father was George McGlynn (1857 - 1917) and his mother was Annie McGlynn [nee Brown] (1860 - 1939).  My grandparents had 4 children Cathie (1914 to ...), Annie (May 20 1915 to September 30th 1915), George (1916 to 1999) and my dad John (1918 to 1984).

My grandad was one of 11 children his siblings were John, Jim, George, Mary, Peter Margaret, Bridget, Jane, Hugh and Grace.  My grandad died young and my granny had to go to the USA to make a living for herself and the children left in Ireland.  She later remarried to a George Maybury.?

Hi all! I am new to this so I’m not really sure to begin. I became interested in this because myself and my female cousins are the last line of our McGlynn lineage and I want to know more about our family before the name disappears in the coming generation. Our direct ancestors as long as they have lived in the United States have been James McGlynns and any number of sisters, none of whom ever had any children. From my research my great great great grandfather was James McGlynn, born around 1820, I beleive* in Longford. I am not sure when he moved to New York but it was before 1847 when my great great grandfather was born. I strongly suspect he had a brother or cousin that eventually moved to The US/New York because I have connected to Fourth and fifth cousins on ancestry.com. It is hard to find records from when he still lived in Ireland. I was just wondering if any of this sounds familiar to anyone, and if so, if you would be able to help me learn mode about James’s family! Thanks!
