MCGEE Family History

This famous Gaelic surname recorded in the various spellings of Magee, MacGee, Mc Gee, MacGhee, McGoey, McGahy, Mogey, Moggy, Moggie, MacGhie, and possibly others, is Manx, Irish, and Scottish. It derives from "Mag", an early spelling of "Mac", indicating "son of ", plus the personal byname "Aodh" meaning "Fire", originally the name of a pagan god. The Irish nameholders belonged primarily to Ulster and their original territory lay on the borders of counties Donegal and Tyrone. It is interesting to note that the large neck of land on the east of Lough Larne in County Antrim is called Island Magee indicating that this territory was at one time in the possession of the Magees...

McGee My family has lived for most of the last 200 years in Western North Carolina. We believe they immigrated to America some time in the 1740's through Philadelphia. There was a John McGee paroled in Virginia from the Continental Army after the revolution. He or his son we believe William settled around 1800 in North Carolina. We have traced some family members to Tennessee and Ohio.

Micheal Mc gee born 1828 in Enniskillen Ireland. Now Northern Ireland. He is I believe my 3rd great grand father. I think he left Ireland probably when about 17 years , with his girl friend who I believe was only 13 at the time, and was pregnant!! Regards Simon Spence

Hello, I too am trying to find the origins of my McGee family line. I've heard many stories, some including that our immigrating McGee was actually from the MacGregor clan. I'd like to get to the bottom of this if possible. The McGee's in my line settled in North and South Carolina mostly. The immigrant was thought to be a John McGee, possibly a deserter of the British army. I love to learn about my history and would love any help.  Thank you for your time!!
