MCCONNELL Family History

O'Connell is a last name of Irish origin. It is an Anglicisation of the Gaelic ? Conaill (meaning "descendant of Conall"). The personal name Conall is possibly composed of the elements con (from c? meaning "hound" or "wolf") and gal (meaning "valour").

Hi, I'm Sue Wemett, living in New York, USA. My family seeks the Scotland origin of our 6x great-grandfather George McConnell 1725-1788. His parents eloped to Berwick-on-Tweed, Northumberland, England, probably where George was born.  George's father died young & his mother, Sarah Carson (or variation) McConnell took him to live with her parents in the Highlands. George arrived in New York c.1750 & married 1752. They had 9 children. My 5x great-grandfather married twice, his 2nd marriage producing a large family in Prince Edward County, Ontario, Canada.

Hello, I am Stacey White. My paternal grandmother was Anna McConnell of Annalong. She had migrated to NY and had 5 children. I knew three of the 5 and don't remember hearing much about either of my grandparents. I never had a chance to meet her or even see a picture of her. Not sure what happened there.

Hi, My name is Kelli Wood. My Father was Francis McConnell born in 1929 in Ottawa, Canada. My Father always indicated his line was from County Cork.

My Cousin Perry McConnell says our Great Great Grandfather Samuel McConnell was born in Carncastle, County Antrim.
?Now it is possible that Samuel's children moved south from Northern Ireland and settled in the regions of Cork and Kerry.?

My paternal 3rd Great Grandfather was Denis McConnell from Donegal, Ireland and was a Tin Smith I don't yet know much about him or his family and wife. His daughter, Margaret McConnell  was my 2nd great-grandmother. She married my 2nd great-grandfather, Hugh Caulfield in Stranolar, Donegal on 15 September 1887 and they lived in Raphoe, Donegal. Hugh Caulfield was also a Tin Smith as was his father, Patrick Caulfield. See attached image of part of my family tree.

    ?

??Hugh and Margaret lived in Letterkenny Town in 1901 and in 1911 were living in Raphoe, Donegal. Margaret died 1 May 1930 in Raphoe, Donegal. They had 7 children:

Mary Caulfield: Married Patrick J O'Freddy and had only one child I could find, Margaret Mary O'Freddy Born 5 March 1917 Letterkenny, Donegal (I can't find any records of them after that)

Denis Caulfield: Born 1892, killed in action during World War 1 in 1916
Annie Caulfield: Born 1894, died 1965
Sarah Caulfield: Born 1897, married John (Jack) Doherty and he died in Raphoe, Donegal 20 January 1955. They had 3 children: Bridget Doherty who married Michael J Mills born 7 Jul 1922 County, Mayo, Ireland died 2002, Glasgow, Scotland. Charles Doherty and Patrick Doherty

Alice Caulfield, my Great-Grandmother, married Michael McGaughey, born Fintona, County Tyrone
    Michael Caulfield: Married Mary Hegerty
    Margaret Caulfield: Married Patrick McGinley

Thomas McConnell, great grandfather, Mary Kerr McConnell, owned textile Mills near Glascow, Scotland, death certificates of them show family resided or born in Ayershire Scotland. Thomas and Mary and family immigrated to U.S. and built and owned mills in PA, and in Easthampton, MA My grandfather Archibald McConnell stated our family history as being descendants of Irish Kings, this information has been passed down through the generations, and would love to be able to have our family name traced back, so I can share it with my elderly Mother Heather McConnell Bugbee. Thank you for any information you could provide. Sincerely, Edith Bugbee Tarrant

(Part 1 of 3) The McConnell name has a long history in Ireland, but now DNA and some recorded history says its origin is from the south-west region of the Emerald Island. The McConnell story [dominated by DNA tribal marker R1b-L513, Subgroup O2] can trace their beginnings to what is now County Kerry from 50 BCE. Perhaps the journey begins with the Clanna Dedad; Deda, son of Sen or Deda Mac Sin. The McConnell surname origin is possibly a branch of what will become the Dáirine [R1b-L513] who are found in south Ireland around 300 CE.

(Part 2 of 3) According to research, the Dáirine will join with the Dál Riata of north-east Ireland and invade Scotland around 500 CE. But how could this be? Recent discoveries from DNA testing are unlocking the migration patterns of Celtic tribes as late as 800 CE to 1200 CE. The McConnell story begins in pre-history Ireland but many of his descendants will then move to Kintyre, Scotland where they and other R1b-L513 members will form the Dalriada. This line and many of his kin will then travel to Brittany, France during the Dark Ages.

Fascinating I knew McConnell's came from Scotland and Ireland little did I know they went from Ireland to Scotland and then back to Ireland at the "behest" of the English. Where does Niall of the nine hostages fall into this or does he.
