This famous Scottish clan surname, recorded as Macall, Maccall, McCall, Maccaull, McKall, McKaile, and others, is a patronymic nickname, with two possible origin sources. Firstly it may be an anglicized form of the pre 7th century Olde Gaelic name "Mac Cathmhaoil". This is a derivation of the personal name "Cath-mhaol" which translates as "Battle Chief", or in this case "son of Battle-chief". An Alternate possibility is that it may be a variant of the patronymic Mac Cathail, "the son of Cathal" from the Olde Welsh "Catgual" meaning "war-wielder". 1776-1781. From there we moved into the Mountains of North Carolina where we reside to this day.

My GREAT grandmother was Beulah Belle McCall born on 11/15/1894 in Spring Creek Township of Black Hawk County Iowa.. The genealogy I have traces back to her great grandfather who was born in 1768 and was married to Sharlotte McCall born in 1772. Anyone know the name of Sharlotte's father who was born in Scotland?

Trying to find out about Thomas McCall born Ireland 1824 - died in Leeds 1907, 3x great grandfather. From Ireland, as was his father Thomas McCall, both land surveyors according to a marriage certificate in Leeds, England, Sept 1845, marrying Caroline Hilton. England census gives no further info than from Ireland, the question of where is the issue?
