MCCABE Family History
This interesting surname is of Irish and Scottish origin, and is an Anglicized form of the Gaelic "MacCaba" a patronymic from the byname "Caba", a cape or hat. In the Middle Ages Irish chieftains imported fighting men from Scotland to augment their forces. Many of these mercenaries, known as gallowglasses, were the M(a)cCabes who came from Inis Gall in the Hebrides. They served the O'Reillys and the O'Rourkes of Counties Leitrim and Cavan, and received their name from the peculiar hats they wore. They remained in Ireland to find their own sept. William Putnam McCabe (1776 - 1821), was one of the most romantic figures among the United Irishmen...Select Audience

Gerry Coyle
My name is Gerry Coyle I’m writing a book about my father IRA Commandant Henry Coyle he like many others was one of Ireland’s freedom fighters. One of his allies in Scotland in the 1920s was a man called Bernard McCabe. Bernard was a shop owner in Glasgow at the time he provided the transport for the transportation of war material. He was jailed in Peterhead prison in March 1920. He was released on the 13th February 1922. Just reaching out to see if anyone had pictures or any information about his relatives or what happened him afterwards. Many thanks

I am trying to trace my Great Grandfather who seems to have appeared in South Africa out of thin air some time in the mid 1800s and married Emma Elizabeth Field. One of their children was Arthur Field McCabe, my Grandfather. Many thanks for any help.

My grandmother was a McCabe. She married a Rossouw from Tzaneen. Her father was a missionary on the springbok flats near Nylstroom. There is still an are there called McCabe. I do not know what his name was only that they came from Ireland. If you have more info please share.
