    Lawrence

Robert Lawrence, the silversmith who was knighted after joining a crusade with Richard Lionheart in 1188-1191, actually was of mixed Flemish (where the name was spelled Lauwereyns) and English descent, a son of lord Lauwrijn (Lawrence) of Cadzand who himself emigrated to East Sussex, UK in 1120. Robert Lawrence / Lauwereyns learned the art of silver smith in Bruges, went into service of the house of Lancaster and thus ended up residing in the area. Forebears of Lauwrence of Cadsant became lords of Cadzand around 874 and descended from Iago de Cadsant of Gwynedd, born in 798 and married to a daughter of Liederik de Buck, forester of Flanders, deceased in 865 in Oostkerke (Diksmuide), County of Flanders. Line of descent: Iago of Cadsant, son of Cadfan, prince of Rhodri 745-798 > Frederik van Cadsant 815-874 who became hereditary heir of the island of Cadsant via his mother > Acturus of Cadsant °865 Suffolk, UK and married Eysteinndottir, a daughter of Malahule, the duke of Suffolk > Anton I of Cadsant °912 Suffolk who married Hulle of Suffolk, a daughter of Hallad of Suffolk > Oliver of Cadsant °930 Suffolk who was a merchant between England and Flanders (deceased in Cadzand) > John of Cadsant °950 Cadzand who married Amadea, princess of Ivrea, daughter of the marquis of Ivrea and Geberga de Dijon (from this maternal line, the crest was derived, whereas forebears of Cadsant had differing crests) > John of Cadsant °1010 Cadzand, married Gertrude of Ghent, a daughter of Arnulf II of Holland and Lutgardis of Luxemburg > Anton II of Cadsant °1040 who married Emma Capet de France, a daughter of Henry I, king of France and Rurikide de Kiev > Lawrence of Cadsant °1070 > Robert Lawrence / Lauwereyns °1100 > Robert Lawrence °1125 in East Sussex, married to Aline de Warenne. I am a descendant of Odin Lawrence / Lauwereyns, lord of Diepenheede, born in 1222, a son of Robert Lawrence who was married to Amabil de Trafford (1196-1265). A great-grandson of Odin would eventually move back to England under the name of Lawrence. That is in big lines how we have reconstructed our family tree based on genealogic, historical, heraldic and geneographic research (www.laurentii.be).
