KIRK Family History
This is an Anglo-Scottish surname which is ultimately of Norwegian pre 7th century origins. Found originally in the north of England and in Scotland, it can be either a topographical name denoting residence near a church, or a metonymic occupational name for someone employed in a church. The derivation of the name in both cases is from the Northern Middle English word "kirk", church, from the Old Norse "kirkja". Topographical surnames were among the earliest created, since both natural and man-made features in the landscape provided easily recognisable distinguishing names in the small communities of the Middle Ages.Select Audience

I recently had a case study done on my Y-DNA. My closest DNA matches converge in Galloway in the lowland counties of Wigtown and Kircudbrightshire. Although old land records show there were no families in that area with the surname Church, there were families with the surname Kirk. In early census data the Galloway Kirks concentrate between the parishes of Anwoth and Balmaclellan. It is believed that the surname Kirk was possibly anglicized to Church after my family moved to Northern Ireland possibly as part of the Plantation of Ulster. In order to confirm that my paternal ancestors originated from this area I would need to find current day Kirk farmers from the area between the parishes of Anwoth and Balmaclellan who would be willing to do commercial DNA testing. I too have had a Y-DNA match for this same area around Balmaclellan. It was performed by Dr. Tyrone Bowes. My ancestor was John Kirk born in Scotland circa 1725 before showing up in Culpepper, Virginia about 1750. We may be able to match one of the existing Kirks in the Southwest Scotland area.

I am researching my family member John L. Kirk, born 1745, Tipperary Island. Died 1818. He married Mary Sarah Steele in 1781 in Montgomery, N.C. They possibly had 18 children. John L. Kirk died in Stanly, N.C. I have traced John L. Kirk to parents Daniel Kirk born in Perthshire Scotland and Anna Knight born in Donegal, Ireland. I then have Daniel’s parents as John Thomas Kirk and Mary Ann Steel. I hope I’m on the right track, I have researched hours and hours on this. I am a Kirk so I really want to get my family history down right.

I am interested in finding out more about my family history in Ireland. The information I have on my Irish ancestor is that his name was John Kirk. He was born on June 8, 1745 in Tipperary, Ireland and at some point before 1780, he moved to America. He married Mary Sarah Steele who was born around 1755 in Ireland. Some of the information I found indicated that John's father's name may have been Lewis Kirk.

?I don't have a lot of knowledge from my side of the family because both?? my grandparents died before I do my ancestry. I do have this image my uncle sent me about my Kirk side of the family (my dad). I am trying to find out more things such as if we are affiliated with clans Scottish/irish, where about the regions we migrated from, etc. literally anything that can help me compile my history.
