HARPER Family History

This long-established and distinguished surname may be either of Anglo-Saxon or Old French origin, and is an occupational name for a player on the harp. The derivation is from the Olde English pre 7th Century "hearp", Middle English "harp", with the addition of the agent suffix "-er". In its original sense "a man who has to do with", the "-er" designates persons according to their profession or occupation. Some early forms of the name, for example, Harpour and Harpur, have their origins in the Anglo-French harpour", Old French "harpeor", a harper. In medieval times, the harper was one of the most important figures at baronial halls, festivals and fairs, and the Brehon laws of Scotland and Ireland ranked the playing of the harp as "the one art of music which deserves nobility"...

You are correct about misinformation. My ancestor was related to William Harper b. 1704. They were not descendants of William and Elma Woodward Harper of Carmoney.

Looking for mother and father of William Harper born 1704 believe in Ulster, Ireland. He was married to Margaret Knox born 1711. They both and their family, Benjamin b 1737, Robert b 1742, Daniel b 1747, William b. 1749, James b 1751, John b 1753 and Jane D. b 1756 all in we believe Ulster, Ireland and moved to America in 1767. Would any have any information on this family of who his parents were and where they were born? Other researchers show his father as William married to Elma Joyce Woodward both born in England but I am not so sure that is true. No factual evidence to prove it. Also if any does find this family and have any birth information or baptism information and their parish. Anything would be greatly appreciated. I th

William Harper sailed with his family from Belfast to Charleston, South Carolina in 1753ish timeframe and settled in Lancaster, South Carolina. I am trying to track down where teh Harpers actually came from in Ireland, who are my very distant relatives now and where are they...I am looking at a trip to Ireland to meet them.
