DODD Family History
This name derives from a Germanic word used to describe something round and plump, and was probably first used as a nickname before developing into personal name, for example 'Dodda' (of Worcestershire, as recorded in 1066), and 'Dodde de Lismanoch' (of Devonshire, recorded in 1194).
As a personal name, it was written in medieval Middle English as 'Dodde' and 'Dudde', and was in use from Lincolnshire to Devonshire, and from Essex to Lancashire until the 14th Century.
The Dods, Dodds, and Dodson versions would be directly patronymic and would therefore literally mean 'the son of Dod/Dodd'.
Many early examples of the surname appear on the 1273 Hundred Rolls, including Benedict Dod of Northamptonshire, Peter Dod of Oxfordshire, Richard Dod of Cambridgeshire, and William Dod of Shropshire. While a Magota Dodson, and a Johannes Dod both appear on the 1379 Poll Tax of Yorkshire.
In Wales, the surname is not among the most common of Welsh surnames, but there are nevertheless some notable references to it on the country's records, in particular in Denbighshire and Flintshire where there were significant clusters on the mid-19th century censuses. Many of the Dod, Dodd and Dodds references in Flintshire date from the late 16th century in the Hawarden area, and from the early 17th century in the Wrexham area of Denbighshire.
