COYNE Family History

Recorded in the spellings of Coen, Coyne, Kilcoyne, and Kyne, this name is usually Irish, but as Coen and Cohen when encountered outside of Ireland, may be Hebrew. When from Ireland it derives from two Gaelic surnames being O' Cadhain originally found in the province of Connacht, and specifically County Mayo, and O' Comhdhain in the province of Ulster. The prefix O' indicates male descendant of, plus in this case either of the personal bynames Cadhan meaning "wild goose" suggesting perhaps that members of the clan were at times either forced to flee abroad, or Comhdan, which has the unusual translation of "a shared gift"...

    My Name is John Edward Coyne. My Grandfather was William Coyne born in Wolverhampton whose Father (Thomas) was also born in Wolverhampton and may have ended his days in Philadelphia USA. Thomas had a daughter Leonora who emigrated to Philadelphia and married a James Hendry who died as a US Serviceman in 1908(?). I hwere from in Irelandave no knowledge of where the Coyne's were from in Ireland and would love to know.

    Oops, I'll try again.... My mother, Anne Marie Coyne and her sister, Agnes Coyne, both lived in Boston, Mass. In the 1930's. She told a story about an ancestor in County Cork who was hung as a pirate.
