CHAPMAN Family History

INTRODUCTION

This ancient, popular, and very important surname is of Olde English, German and Anglo-Saxon pre 5th century origins. Spelt in several ways including Chapman, Chipman, and Chipper (English), Kauf, Kaufman and Kaufler Austro-German), and Koopman (Danish), Coopman and de Copeman (Flemish), this is an occupational name for a merchant or trader. It believed that however spelt, the origination is from the Olde English "ceapmann", itself a compound consisting of the elements "ceap", meaning to barter or bargain and "mann", a person, or in this context, a travelling man. The surname development includes the following early examples taken from authentic charters of the period: Alice Chepman of Derbyshire in the year 1207, Berchtoldus Kofman of Weinzberg, Germany, in the year 1287, and Henry le Chupman of Hampshire in 1327...

Chapman (Variants: Chatman, Capman, Champman)

An English occupational name from Middle English chap(pe)man , chepman ‘merchant, trader’ (Old English c?apmann , c?pemann ).

In Jewish, adopted probably for a like-sounding or like-meaning name in another European language, for example Kaufman.

Early bearers of the surname include: Willelmus Chapman, 1377 in Poll Tax (Kennington, Kent); Johannes Chapman, 1377 in Poll Tax (Normanby, Lincs); Sibila Chapman, 1377 in Poll Tax (Uppingham, Rutland); Waltero le Chapeman, 1381 in Poll Tax (Oxford, Oxon); Willelmus Chapman, 1381 in Poll Tax (Sturmer, Essex); Anne Chapman, 1538 in IGI (Broughton by Brigg, Lincs); Johanis. Chapman, 1538 in IGI (Kelshall, Herts); Mgy Chapman, 1538 in IGI (Fairsted, Essex); Ricardus Chapman, 1539 in IGI (Calne, Wilts); Henry Chapman, 1540 in IGI (Rye, Sussex).

William Chapman, an English convict, was transported aboard the "Albion" on 17 May 1823, settling in Van Diemen's Land, Australia.

In 1891, the surname was recorded in England and Wales with 44,481 occurrences and a further 636 in Scotland.

In mathematics, the equation Chapman-Kolmogorov is derived from the both Sydney Chapman and Russian mathematician Andrey Kolmogorov, specifically in the theory of Markovian stochastic procceses in probability theory.

Another noted, Tracy Chapman (b.1964), the American singer-songwriter, best known for her song ‘Fast Car’.

Chapman Family from Wexford

CHAPMAN derives from an Old English word meaning merchant or trader. The name occurs in Irish records as le Chapman as far back as the thirteenth century and is found in all provinces in Ireland, except Connacht.

There are long established Chapman families in north Wexford and Shelburne in the south of the county. John Chapman was on an inquisition relating to the Preceptory of Kilclogan in 1541. The Civil Survey of 1654 records Michael Chapman, an 'Irish Papist', holding a parcel of land at Gallstown (Templetown parish) in 1640.

Rev, William Chapman was Parish Priest of New Ross from 1786 to 1818. and Dean of Ferns from 1801. He was a native of Great Graigue, in the Hook area, and is buried in the old cemetery at Churchtown.

Dean Chapman built a new parish church in New Ross (now St. Michael's Theatre) which served from 1806 until the present parish church was built in 1902. He introduced the Carmelite nuns to New Ross in 1817, and acted as their chaplain for a short period before he retired.

It was on the advice of Dean Chapman that Thomas Houghton, Ballyanne House, erected and endowed the Houghton Hospital in New Ross. His nephew, Rev. George Chapman, was later a curate in New Ross. Because of their support for Catholic emancipation and their refusal to vote for the Marquis of Ely in elections, the Chapmans were evicted from the Hook and moved to Ringwood in Co. Kilkenny.

'Antiquarian', who was a regular contributor to 'The People' on historical matters, in the early part of this century, states (19-1-1912) that the Chapmans have been in Shelburne since the thirteenth century.

Prominence has been achieved for the name in recent times by the notable successes attained by George Chapman, Glandoran House, Gorey, as a breeder of prize-winning horses, including the winner of the supreme championship of the Dublin Horse Show in 1979.

Wexford Chapman's listed in the 1985 telephone directory are: Augustine, Johnshill, Fethard-on-Sea: Benjamin, Tobergal House, Ferns; Brendan, Homeleigh, Duncannon; George, Glandoran, Gorey; James Gerard, The Mountain, Bally kelly; John, Ballinapark, Bunclody; John, Tara Heights. Bellefield, Enniscorthy; Joseph, Ramstown, Fethard-on-Sea; M. Chapman, Schoolhouse Road, Rosbercon, New Ross; Nicholas, 5, Mansfield Drive, Coolcotts, Wexford; Nicholas P., Ramstown, Fethard-on-Sea; Patrick, Tara Hill, Gorey; Peter, Grantstown, Wellingtonbridge; Richard, Ramstown; Robert, Slade, Fethard-on-Sea; Thomas, 20 Weafer St., Enniscorthy: balycarrigeen, Ferns; William Wesley, Killowen, Gorey. Joseph Chapman, Ramstown. Fethard-on-Sea, is a Peace Commissioner

    Pauline Sayers

Hi my name is Pauline and I'm from Cape Town, South Africa.  I'm pleased to meet all of you.  My mother is a Chapman, born Yvonne Chapman in Durban, Natal, South Africa.  As far as I can tell my great great grandparents immigrated from the UK (not sure where) to St Helena Island (a British Protectorate), and worked / lived there until the island had an economic low.  They came to Port Natal, South Africa in the mid to late 1800's to find work and make a life.  My mother's father, Barnard (or Bernard) Chapman was born in Natal, South Africa and started a few panel beating shops and was very successful, many of the family were involved in the family business and as a result were panel beaters.  The business has passed down the generations, and today my cousins own and run it in Durban, South Africa.  Does any one know if any Chapman's have lineage or roots to Lebanon perhaps please?  My family always spoke of it but I can't seem to find any connection.

    Chapman

I am looking for information about a Chapman family from County Wicklow. William George Chapman b. abt. 1832 in Newtownmountkennedy , County Wicklow migrated to Victoria , Australia sometime between 1850 and 1855. He was a Saddler. William married in Melborne, Victoria in 1855 - to his first wife, Tamar Waldron. Tamar died in 1862. All but one of their children died in infancy. William remarried in 1863 (in Melbourne). His second wife was Jane Musson. Later, in about 1880,, William and his second wife, Jane and his 2 surviving sons (one from the first marriage and one from the second) moved to New Zealand (Christchurch). William has descendents in New Zealand. I am trying to figure out what William's ancestry is. William's Mot
