CANNING Family History
This is an English locational name from a place in Wiltshire called Cannings, deriving from the Olde English 'Caningas' meaning 'people of cana' - a nickname of uncertian origin. Two families of this name came to C. Derry from England and were very active in organizing the plantation of Ulster in 1615. Two Gaelic Irish families O Cainin of Westmeath and Offaly, and Cannon of Co. Donegal have occasionally anglicized their name as Canning. I am and canning on my fathers side. our family lives in Newfoundland, Canada. I never had any knowledge of where we came from until i tried ancestry and it seems we travelled from dorset england in the early 1800's. some research says the name is irish.

I am a Canning from my Fathers side. I believe my Grandad grew up in ireland. I have been told before it is a very irish last name. All the Cannings in my family now, that I know of are now living in South England .
