BRACKEN Family History
Recorded as usually as Bracken, and much more rarely as Brahan, Braghan, Breaghan, Breagan, Broughan and Brouhan, this is a surname of Irish origins. Previously recorded as O' Bracken, the O' prefix meaning male descendant being largely lost in the 17th century, and descending from the original Gaelic name O' Breacain, it is from the region of County Kildare and County Offally (formerly known as Kings County). Here it is said, the clan have been resident since at least medieval times. The name means 'speckled' from the ancient word 'breac', and as such was apparently a nickname given to the first chief or nameholder who presumably had freckles...Select Audience

Looking for info on James Bracken from County Fermanagh, Ireland. He married Margaret Bourke on 7 July 1866 in Clonbey, Tipperary, Ireland. He died on 27 July 1886 in Gortnakilly, Cork, Ireland at the age of 48

My ancestor was James Bracken who married Isabella Lunney and came to Australia in 1855. James cam from Drungague. I would very much like to find out about his ancestors. I know there is a possibility his relatives were also James; John; Cornelius; Farrell and Waldron but I can not find any verification for these relatives. They were also from Fermanagh.

Hi Do you have any records of Brackens in the British Army in Ceylon - ideally in Kandy - around 1815-1830 - who might have had a child baptised there called Elizabeth Bracken who married a William Smith and had a daughter Sophia Emelia Brecken Smith and married Sybren Mathew Perera please? Probably the 83rd regiment (some variants of Bracken name and at least one of the soldiers - James Brackenbury - had a 'native woman' and they had children baptised in Kandy while he was serving there. One of the children was an Elizabeth but she died young. You can see the other names in the list at http://www.ceylondatabase.net/military.html
Elizabeth Bracken in my family married William Smith and they had Sophia Emelia Brecken Smith who married Sybren Matthew Perera - they were parents of my great-great-grandmother. My great-grandfather through that line, Theodore Ambrose, married Clara Florence Taylor, who was also from a line with some Irish heritage, probably through 83rd regiment. The two families were close, acting as baptismal sponsors for each other from when my great-grandparents and their siblings were babies. People who knew my great-grandmother tell me she and the family were very proud of their Irish heritage. They were among the social elite of Kandy in their day and had good and prosperous lives but we know little of their Irish past, probably because the army moved on.

Looking for anyone who recognises Dora Sara Bracken originally from Carlow moved to Dublin and married Michael Nolan these are my grahdparents. My mum was Dora Teresa Nolan who married William Peter Gray from Meath my Dad. Mum was from Dublin dad Meath . They settled in Manchester I am one of four kids been youngest. Two sisters Breda Susan and one brother Liam.
