This interesting and unusual surname is of Irish origin, and is an Anglicization of the Gaelic "O Beaglaoich", meaning "descendant of Beaglaoch", a person name composed of the elements "beag", small, and "laoch", hero. This is the name of Co. Donegal sept located in the barony of Kilmacrenan, where its present day representatives are still to be found. The placename Tulloghobegley, a parish in the barony of Kilmacrenan, perpetuates their association with that area. Hi! My name is Kandi K (Begley) Zielke. My 2x Great Grandfather was James Begley. He was born in May of 1835 (possibly 1836) in County Monaghan and immigrated to New York when he was 19 and lived in Washington County in upstate NY until moving to Illinois in 1857.

I did meet her brother Peter, known to us as "Uncle Pete" when he visited America. I have only very vague memory of this meeting, just "the nice old man in the suit".?????? ???????I just finally found where Ahgloragh actually is, for some reason I couldn't find it and thought perhaps Grandma had the town name wrong. Turns out she was right. Anyhow, it feels great to finally be able to pinpoint where my great-grandmother came from!?????
