BALL Family History
This interesting name has a number of possible derivations. Firstly, it may be of early medieval English origin, from a nickname for a short, rounded person, derived from the Middle English "bal(le)", ball, a development of the Olde English pre 7th Century "bealla", and influenced by the Old Norse "bollr". In some cases the nickname may have referred to a bald man, from the same word used in the sense of a round, hairless patch on the skull; interestingly, the modern English term "bald" derives from a contracted form of the Middle English "ballede", from "bal(le)" with "-ede", that is, "having a balle"...Select Audience

I am looking for my Ball family in Ireland. I have them all that emigrated to Canada but am at a Brick wall where he came from. Charles Ball born about 18__ (?) in Ireland and died May 15th 1888 in York, Ontario, Canada. (married Margaret Murphy) He apparently came to Canada with his two brothers "Abraham Ball ~ 1824 Ireland to 1892 dying in Port Neuf Quebec Canada" (married Susannah Williamson from Ireland) and "John Ball born 1822 Ireland and died in 1886 in York, Ontario, Canada" (married Mary Jane Wilson)
If anyone has any information on these 3 men I would be grateful if you could contact me.

My gggrandfather John Ball is listed on the census as being from Ireland. He came to the states and settled in NY, had a son named James who had a son named John Gregory "Lucky" Ball (my grandfather) who became a lion trainer and fairly famous sword swallower. He swallowed 16 swords one time. I would love to find out what part of Ireland he came from since I love all things Irish. We have visited Dublin and stayed at Greystone. Love it!! Also my maiden name is Byrne...went to Bray and Glendolough and felt very much at home. If you have any info..I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you. Dixie Gettings

The Ball story [dominated by DNA tribal marker R1b-L513, Subgroup A1] can trace their origins to the Finn Valley in Donegal, Ireland from 50 BCE. Perhaps the journey begins with the Clanna Dedad; Deda, son of Sen or Deda Mac Sin. The Ball surname origin is from a Northern Ui Neill [R1b-L513] tribe. The Cenél Eoghan and the tribes of Donegal conquered much of Ulster (Derry and Tyrone).
